Federal Filing Deadlines
To be considered on-time/fully compliant, forms must be submitted through the e-file center by 8PM EST on the day of the deadline.
W-2 and/or 1099 Federal filing deadlines are as follows:
- January 31* - Deadline to have W-2 and certain 1099 forms mailed to the recipients. Deadline to have all W-2 and 1099-NEC forms mailed or e-filed to the Federal Government.
- February 15* - Deadline to have the 1099-S, 1099-B and 1099-MISC forms if box 8 or 14 is completed mailed to the recipients.
- February 28* - Deadline to have all other 1099 printed forms mailed to the Federal Government.
- March 31* - Deadline to have all other 1099 forms e-filed to the Federal Government.
The recipient mailing deadline for 1099-MISC forms in one of the following reporting situations is February 15:
- Substitute dividends and tax-exempt interest payments reportable by brokers.
- Gross proceeds paid to attorneys.
* If the deadline date falls on a weekend or holiday date, the deadline is moved to the next business day.
1095 and 1094 Federal filing deadlines are as follows:
- March 1 - Deadline to have forms mailed to the recipients.
- March 31 - Deadline to have forms e-filed to the Federal Government.
The 941 forms are filed quarterly and due one month after the end of each quarter. The deadline dates are as follows:
- April 30* - Deadline to have first quarter 941s submitted to the IRS.
- July 31* - Deadline to have the second quarter 941s submitted to the IRS.
- October 31* - Deadline to have the third quarter 941s submitted to the IRS.
- January 31* - Deadline to have the fourth quarter 941s submitted to the IRS.
* If the deadline date falls on a weekend or holiday date, the deadline is moved to the next business day.
The 944 and 940 forms are filed annually and are due one month after the end of each year. The deadline date for the 944 and 940 forms is January 31.
State Filing Deadlines
The state filing deadline dates vary. The deadline to submit state forms is 8PM EST 48 hours prior to the deadline for that particular state. Please contact your state or a tax professional for exact deadlines.
