"Unable to locate the application's database" - Standalone (2018 and newer)

This message will occur when Yearli is unable to find the database attached to the SQL Server.  This usually results from an incomplete installation.  

Check for anti-virus or anti-spam / Run database attach executables

  1. Determine if anti-virus or anti-spyware software was running during the installation. If they were running, go to the next section; otherwise proceed to the next step.
  2. Navigate to C:\ProgramData\Yearli\20XX* where XX is the year of the software, for the affected version of Yearli.
  3. Check to see if a folder called Data exists in this directory. If the folder does not exist, go to Procedure 2; otherwise proceed to the next step.
  4. Run the SQLUtility in the Utilities folder located at C:\Program Files or Program Files (x86)\Greatland Corporation\Yearli\20XX* where XX is the year of the software.
  5. Choose Create / Update database.
  6. Open Yearli to see if the error persists.

Verify SQL instance is installed and running

  1. Access the Microsoft SQL Server Configuration Manager.  For steps to do this see the How do I access SQL Server Configuration Manager? article.
  2. Click on “SQL Server Services” to display a list of the currently running services.
  3. Verify that SQL Server (GREATLAND) is running.
  4. Right click and select Start if required.
  5. Proceed to Procedure 3 if the error persists.

Disable Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, and Reinstall Yearli

  1. Disable all anti-virus or anti-spyware programs.
  2. Access the Windows Run window by pressing the Windows key and R key on the keyboard.
  3. Type "appwiz.cpl" without the quotes in the Open field.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Uninstall Yearli for the specified tax year.
  6. Reinstall Yearli.

Check for Compressed Files/Folders

  1. Navigate to C:\ProgramData\Yearli\20XX\Data*, where XX is the year of the software.
  2. Right click the .mdf and .ldf files and, for each, select Properties.
  3. Click Advanced.
  4. Ensure "Compress contents to save to disk space" and "Encrypt contents to secure data" are not checked.
  5. Run the SQLUtility in the Utilities folder located at C:\Program Files or Program Files (x86)\Greatland Corporation\Yearli\20XX* where XX is the year of the software..
  6. Choose Create / Update database.
  7. Open Yearli to see if the error persists.

Install a new database

Note: Only take the following steps if there has not be any data entered for the year of Yearli that is receiving this error.

  1. Access the Windows Run window by pressing the Windows key and R key on the keyboard.
  2. Type "appwiz.cpl" without the quotes in the Open field.
  3. Click OK.
  4. Uninstall Yearli for the specified tax year.
  5. Navigate to C:\ProgramData\Yearli.
  6. Right click on the folder for the affected year of Yearli.
  7. Choose Rename.
  8. Rename the folder to "20XX.old" without the quotes, where XX is the year of the software.
  9. Reinstall Yearli. 

Changing First and Second failure to Restart the Service

  1. Access the Windows Run window by pressing the Windows key and R key on the keyboard.
  2. Type "services.msc" without the quotes in the Open field.
  3. Click OK.
  4. Right click on SQL Server (GREATLANDYD) and choose Properties.
  5. Click on the Recovery tab.
  6. For First and Second failure choose Restart the Service.
  7. Click OK to save the changes.
*Note: The ProgramData folder is a hidden folder. You must show hidden folders in order to access it.
