The Yearli Desktop software does not offer the ability to submit requests for filing extensions to the federal government. Please use the information below to find the best process to request a filing extension from the federal government.
1095 Extension
- Complete Form 8809.
- File the 8809 as soon as it is known an extension is needed. The 8809 must be filed by the due date of the return (February 28 for paper filed 1095 forms or March 31 for e-filed 1095 forms).
- If approved, the extension will be for 30 days from the original due date of the return.
- A second extension may be requested for an additional 30 days. If this is needed, complete form 8809 and check the box on line 5.

1099 Extension
- You can get an automatic 30-day extension of time to file by completing Form 8809.
- For form 1099-NEC, no automatic extension is available.
- A signature or explanation may be required for the extension.
- File the 8809 and extension request as soon as it is known an extension is needed. The 8809 must be filed by the due date of the return (January 31).
- Under certain hardship conditions, you may apply for an additional 30-day extension.

W-2 Extension
Effective with Tax Year 2016 there is no automatic filing extension given to employers. To request a W-2 filing extension:
- You can get an automatic 30-day extension of time to file by completing Form 8809.
- For form W-2, no automatic extension is available.
- A signature or explanation may be required for the extension.
